Baby gate

The very first safety feature I bought for my Airbnb was this super convenient built-in baby gate. If you have stairs, a baby gate is an absolute necessity, period. What I love about this built-in baby gate is that it’s super easy to use and it looks great both when installed and not installed.

With this baby gate, you’ll never make your guests go searching around for one in your closets or get frustrated trying to set it up.

Child-proof cabinet locks

When I first opened my Airbnb, I started with all of two family-friendly items–the baby gate linked above and one other non-negotiable: these child-proof cabinet locks. If you have kids, you undoubtedly already have these on some of your cabinets at home, like ones that store your cleaning supplies.

There’s no reason at all to risk kids getting into any items that are potentially hazardous, so make sure you have these cheap, easy-to-install child-proof cabinet locks on any cabinet kids shouldn’t get into at your Airbnb.

Fireplace guard

If you have any type of fireplace at your Airbnb that’s in reach of kids, I highly recommend a fireplace guard. Fireplace guards help protect anyone that happens to trip and fall near the fireplace from getting burned. This is crucial even if you have a gas fireplace; I’ve read that it can be surprisingly hard to remove yourself once you fall onto the hot glass, posing a serious risk of injury.

Many fireplace guards cost close to $100 and have extravagant designs; this simple and inexpensive fireplace guard is the total opposite, making it perfect for any Airbnb.

Furniture anchors

Furniture anchors aren’t always necessary, but if you have a tall bookshelf or any other wobbly furniture, furniture anchors will help keep them from toppling over. This is especially important when kids inevitably climb on a piece of furniture or use it to pull themselves up. The best part is, these furniture anchors are cheap and easy to install.

Kids’ Dinnerware

While not necessarily a safety feature, this adorable and dishwasher-safe kids’ dinnerware set not only makes mealtime much easier for your Airbnb guests with young kids, but you’ll also be happy to have fewer broken plates. Win-win.

As much as I love hosting families, I admittedly don’t supply many kids’ items at my Airbnb. I stick to the five essentials in this post. That’s because things like high-chairs and pack ‘n plays are hard to keep clean and can even become dangerous, so I don’t provide them.
